UPMC CancerCenter to Honor Hillmans with Name Change

5/31/2017

The Hillman Cancer Center, the flagship clinical and research facility of the UPMC CancerCenter network, is renowned for providing world-class cancer care. Today, officials from UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute announced that all 50-plus cancer center locations within the global network will be renamed UPMC Hillman Cancer Center
“This new name, which honors the integrity, high standards and vital contributions of Henry and Elsie Hillman, underscores our commitment to systemwide quality and innovation at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center,” said Jeffrey A. Romoff, president and chief executive officer of UPMC. “The Hillmans were instrumental in creating this regional treasure, which attracts top scientists and physicians who are bringing hope and cures to our patients every day. We are honored to share the Hillman name.”

Through the Hillman Foundation and the Henry L. Hillman Foundation, the late Henry and Elsie Hillman made generous contributions throughout the region, especially in science and medicine. Their vision of making Pittsburgh a world leader in cancer care became a reality in 2002 with a $10 million grant to establish the Hillman Cancer Center. Their support for the Hillman Fellows Program helped to attract promising young researchers and to foster the development of novel cancer treatments.

As the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center provides access to high-quality, compassionate care, more than 400 clinical trials and ground-breaking research. The more than 100,000 patients treated annually at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center locations do not have to travel far to have access to that care.

“When patients learn they have cancer, many of them want to travel to Pittsburgh to be treated at Hillman Cancer Center,” said Stanley Marks, M.D., chairman of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. “We want patients to understand that they do not have to leave their communities to access UPMC’s most advanced, evidence-based cancer treatments. By sharing clinical pathways and best practices, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center strives to provide its patients worldwide with the highest standard of care.”

The Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh was designed to serve as the synergistic hub for patient care and research. Today, the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center network includes more than 600 scientists and health care professionals from 30 disciplines collaborating to improve the understanding of cancer and to develop new lifesaving approaches to cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment. Their research and development of biological therapies, cancer vaccines and findings in cancer immunology have helped to make the UPMC Hillman Cancer Center one of the largest integrated community networks of cancer doctors and oncology specialists in the United States.

UPMC will institute the new name and logo at all UPMC Hillman Cancer Center locations in the U.S. and at its international locations through the end of this year.
