Dr. McGough received his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, and his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his orthopaedic training at Brown University, and an orthopaedic traumatology fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital. He trained in orthopaedic oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and remained at that institution as a clinical specialist and research fellow following his fellowship.

His clinical interests include bone and soft tissue sarcomas, pelvic reconstruction, limb salvage, and metastatic disease to bone. His research has been in angiogenesis and chondrosarcoma. He is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters, and maintains an active teaching schedule at the University of Pittsburgh, as well as at Hamot Medical Center.
