We're Your Health Insurance Coverage Advocate

Knowing what to do if your insurance plan denies your cancer care is vital to your good health.

If your health insurance plan denies your prescribed cancer treatment, call your oncologist’s office. The staff can discuss your care with the insurance company on your behalf.

We will:

  1. Need to make copies of your insurance cards and any other related information about your coverage.
  2. Check the extent or limitations of your insurance coverage.
  3. File your claim with your insurance company or health care organization on your behalf, with your written consent.

If your insurance coverage appears inadequate or your carrier chooses not to cover our services, we'll work with you to find assistance programs that may help with the cost of your cancer care.

Although our staff will help you get insurance authorization to receive treatment, you are responsible for understanding the terms of your health care plan. Call your insurance company to confirm that UPMC and UPP are on their list of providers.

UPMC Hillman Cancer Center Patient Billing

On your first visit, we will confirm your health care insurance coverage when you show your insurance ID card and pre-authorization form.

Depending on your health plan, you may have a co-payment.

You will receive two bills from UPMC:

  • One for the hospital and facility services.
  • Another from the University of Pittsburgh Physicians (UPP) for doctors' services. This bill may include charges from other consulting doctors who we asked to review your medical records.

If you have a deductible, your bill will reflect that.

If you're on workers' compensation, you will need to provide records from your employer.

Our billing department can address questions about your bills or the cost of treatment at any UPMC Hillman Cancer Center location. Call UPP at 412-442-9600.
