The UPMC Division of Endocrine Surgery is comprised of a dedicated team of surgeons specially trained in the treatment of endocrine cancers and diseases. Our expert endocrine surgical oncologists work in collaboration with medical endocrinologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, diagnostic radiologists, pathologists, nuclear medicine physicians, and other allied health care providers to use leading-edge molecular-based diagnostics and advanced techniques to deliver comprehensive care for patients with endocrine surgery diseases and cancers.

General Information

Appointments can be made by calling the number provided or coordinated through a family physician or PCP, or through another specialist. This enables us to obtain records needed to make a patient's appointment and to have treatment options available at the time of visit.

Our fellowship-trained endocrine surgical oncologists specialize in the treatment of all types and stages of cancers of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, and endocrine pancreas, including:

  • Adrenal cancer.
  • Familial medullary thyroid cancer.
  • Familial pheochromocytoma/paraganglioma syndrome.
  • Functional adrenal tumor (Cushing’s, primary hyperaldosteronism, and virilizing).
  • Graves’ disease.
  • Hyperparathyroidism (primary, secondary, and tertiary).
  • Thyroid cancer.
  • Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) types 1, 2, and 4.
  • Neuroendocrine tumors of the pancreas.
  • Parathyroid cancer.
  • Thyroid nodular disease.
  • Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease.

Our experts work collaboratively and programmatically to develop an effective, individualized treatment plan for each patient that may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, molecular nuclear therapy, placement on clinical trials, or a combination of treatments to best meet their needs. Our surgeons have extensive experience in open and minimally invasive endocrine surgery techniques, including:

  • Adrenal venous sampling for evaluation of select tumors.
  • Cervical block anesthesia.
  • Cervical lymph node dissection.
  • Concise neck exploration for parathyroid and thyroid disease.
  • Intra-operative parathyroid hormone testing.
  • Intra-operative ultrasound lymph node mapping for treating locally aggressive and recurrent thyroid cancers.
  • Laparoscopic transabdominal/retroperitoneal adrenalectomy.
  • Preoperative assessment of voice function including use of in-office ultrasound.
  • Video-assisted parathyroidectomy.

In addition to surgical treatment options, our team offers:

  • Access to supportive services to help patients and their families cope with the physical and mental aspects of cancer treatment, such as nutritional support, family support, psychosocial care, and assistance with discharge planning and integration with outpatient and home-based services.
  • Communication and collaboration with referring physicians and health care providers.
  • Genetic counseling and testing for hereditary endocrine syndromes, including educating patients and families about these disorders and providing management recommendations to their physicians.
  • Individualized multidisciplinary treatment strategies for endocrine diseases, including advanced thyroid cancers.
  • Opportunities to participate in prospective clinical trials.
  • Virtual care visits.
