For more than 30 years, our clinicians, researchers, and caregivers have been working together to understand, diagnose, and treat gynecologic cancer. Together, they can provide you with access to the best diagnostic tools and most advanced cancer treatments available, so your care is individualized and seamless.
With more than 70 sites in Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland, and Ohio, and more than 2,000 physicians, researchers, and staff, UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is one of the largest integrated cancer networks in the country. Each year, we care for 140,000 patients in our region, and more than 30,000 patients from across the country who come to see our world-renowned cancer experts.

Comprehensive Cancer Center
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center is one of just 57 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country — and the only one in western Pennsylvania. The designation isn’t just an accolade; it’s an assurance that your cancer treatment is based on the latest advancements in clinical care and backed by evidence-based research.
A 2015 study of adults with newly diagnosed cancer showed that patients who received care at Comprehensive Cancer Centers had better outcomes than those treated at other medical facilities.
Cancer Research and Clinical Trials
We have more than 300 researchers at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Not only do they study cancer using cutting-edge equipment and technology, but they also collaborate with our clinicians to turn promising laboratory studies into novel clinical trials. This relationship allows UPMC to provide our patients with access to the newest and most innovative treatments.
Currently, UPMC offers patients access to more than 450 clinical trials. They include National Cancer Institute-sponsored studies, industry-sponsored studies, and trials designed and sponsored by Hillman investigators.
We also hold a joint Specialized Program of Research Excellence (SPORE) Award for ovarian cancer with the Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York.
Cancer Prevention
Understanding your risk for gynecologic cancer and receiving regular screenings and exams can lead to early cancer intervention and better outcomes.
Our preventative services include:
- Evaluation of your personal and family medical history.
- Genetic testing and risk assessment through the Cancer Genetics Program.
- Imaging, including ultrasound, CT, and MRI.
- Screenings, including Pap smear, colposcopy, and endometrial tissue sampling.
Advanced Cancer Treatment
Our doctors use a variety of innovative methods to treat your particular type and stage of cancer.
Among them are:
- Intraperitoneal chemotherapy — This localized cancer treatment helps to limit damage to healthy tissue.
- Minimally invasive surgery — Using several small incisions and specialized instruments, this approach can lead to faster healing and fewer side effects.
- Robot-assisted surgery — Surgeons at UPMC are experts in this cutting-edge, minimally invasive surgery, ranking in the top five nationally.
- Sentinel lymph node mapping — This procedure allows doctors to properly diagnose the severity of your cancer and avoid unnecessary treatment.
