Josh Dorman — Testicular Cancer

In October 2023, Josh noticed something abnormal on his body and scheduled an appointment at UPMC Urology with Andrew K. Boiywo, CRNP who examined the area and within 20 seconds, left the room, returning with four other providers. Steven Rockoff, MD, urologist, immediately knew that surgery was necessary.

“Dr. Rockoff was very personable and took the time to explain the next steps and the surgery process,” says Josh.

Josh underwent surgery to remove his right testicle and a mass, which was diagnosed as seminoma testicular cancer. This was Josh's first major surgery, and he was understandably nervous. However, the staff at UPMC Williamsport were excellent, and he experienced no complications. The surgery was performed as a same-day procedure, allowing Josh to go home and begin his recovery.

He was then referred to Eugene Muchnik, MD, medical oncologist, at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Dr. Muchnik, who is well-respected and personable, scheduled Josh for CT scans and follow-up bloodwork. The results showed no signs of metastasis.

“I felt wrong being called a cancer ‘survivor’ because my experience with cancer was nothing compared to the treatment that so many have to go through,” Josh says.

Josh’s experiences at UPMC were all positive, and he credits them with saving his life.

“In recent follow-up scans and my appointment with Dr. Muchnik, he reminded me that if I had not made an appointment so quickly, my results would have been different, and I am indeed a cancer survivor!”

Josh is a local EMT and UPMC employee. He encourages everyone to listen to their body and seek care when needed, as it could save their life, just as it did his.
