Michael Fine – Low Dose Radiation Therapy Patient Story

For 20 years, Michael owned and operated The Country Gourmet, a West Shore farmer's market where he spent long hours bending, lifting, and standing on his feet.

This demanding routine took its toll on Michael's knees. For years, Michael struggled with osteoarthritis, undergoing numerous injections and taking Celebrex.

He also had multiple surgeries on his right knee to address the osteoarthritis, yet continued to experience discomfort, especially when standing for extended periods. His right knee was significantly worse than his left, though both were affected by arthritis.

Michael struggled walking and getting up and down while playing with his grandson. His wife, Diane, who works at UPMC, told him about Low Dose Radiation Therapy (LDRT) offered at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center as a treatment for osteoarthritis.

After Michael had scheduled an appointment, doctors determined that he was an ideal candidate for LDRT. After a few quick treatments, Michael experienced significant relief in both knees. Best of all, the procedure comes without restrictions, discomfort, or side effects.

Joella Wilson, MD, radiation oncologist, was excellent and a pleasure to work with at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Mechanicsburg,” Michael says.

“We are thrilled to be able to offer this effective, non-invasive, and safe therapy for patients suffering from osteoarthritis. Low-dose radiation therapy has strong anti-inflammatory effects and is typically delivered in six short (15-minute) outpatient sessions with studies showing relief from pain in 60-90% of patients,” Dr. Wilson says.

Today, Michael is excited to be able to get down on the ground with his grandson today — and play without pain.
